Press release

Galion City Health Department will be conducting mosquito surveillance in an effort to track mosquito populations and the potential presence of diseases spread by mosquitoes, such as West Nile Virus and Zika Virus.

Surveillance is important. Already this year, three samples have tested positive for West Nile Virus in three counties of Ohio.

We must conduct mosquito surveillance to monitor the mosquitoes in Galion for disease.

To reduce your risk for mosquito-borne diseases, wear EPA-registered mosquito repellents when you are outside, wear long, loose, light-colored clothing, and install or repair screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes outside of your home.

Also, get rid of potential mosquito breeding sites around your yard by emptying standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet water dishes, discarded tires, and birdbaths.

In order to conduct mosquito surveillance, we will be placing mosquito traps in various locations throughout the City of Galion. The traps will be set up in the evening and collected the following morning. The mosquitoes will be removed from the traps and sent to a lab for testing. Please do not disturb the mosquito traps.

There will be a sign posted with each trap that marks the trap as property of the Galion City Health Department.

If you have standing water on your property and would be interested in having us place a mosquito trap, please call 419-468-1075. If the mosquitoes are particularly bothersome in your neighborhood, Galion City Health Department will be providing free mosquito larva killing products in the near future.
