Lowe-Volk Park was “All About That Bass” on Wednesday evening as kids were invited to come out and learn to fish.

Joy Etter-Link led the charge to the pond, and joyfully imparted her wisdom to children and their parents alike. Etter-Link grew up with a love of fishing, learning the sport on the banks of her own pond, but realizes that not everyone has that luxury, so she took it upon herself to instruct participants at least once a year in the principles of fishing in a manner that respects the environment and Ohio law.

Kids of all ages and skill levels came to the event, and all received a free bobber, field guide, and copy of the Ohio fishing rules, as it is required for minors to have an adult in possession of a fishing license when fishing on public property. For some, fishing was a familiar venture to which Etter-Link was able to add finer touches.

Eleven-year-old Eric Morrison was one such individual. Brought to the park by Etter-Link, Morrison learned to fish not too long ago and has since begun to grab his pole at least once a month. On Wednesday, he simply added to his knowledge of both fish and the park’s pond itself.

“I like to fish, so I came out and fished,” Morrison said, “I’m learning what kind of fish are in this pond and what bait I should use.”

Because of the hot weather, the fish were a bit elusive, but the first catch of the evening fell into the excited hands of young Jasmine, whose family just moved to the area.

In response to this firsthand experience, Etter-Link commented on how great it is to see kids learning and getting excited.

“Maybe we’ll get a fish tonight, but it just gives them a lifelong event that they can do that’s fun, outdoor-related, and safe,” Etter-Link said.

“All About That Bass” is one event held throughout the year, in addition to a fishing contest in the early spring and times that older age groups can bust out their lines during nature camp each summer, the sign-ups for which is in March.
