Armed standoff in Tiro, ends with arrest and discovery of explosive device

TIRO, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—On December 7th, 2023 at approximately 1900 hrs., Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office went to 212 Water St. Tiro, Ohio to serve an arrest warrant on John J. Kent. Kent with a no bond warrant issued out of Crawford County Municipal Court, for failure to appear on a Domestic Violence charge.

Deputies knocked on the front door of the residence and John began talking through the closed door to Deputies.

John refused to open the door for Deputies and then later began speaking with Deputies at the front bay window. While speaking with John at the window he still refused to open the door and when Deputies told John that they were going to enter his residence, he pulled a semi-auto pistol from his pocket and held it to his head.

Deputies continued to speak with John and ordered him to put the gun down and he refused. John after spending several minutes at the window he disappeared for roughly a minute, then came back to front door.

John fought with Deputies just inside the house and had to be tased to get him to comply with Deputies. John was transported to Crawford County Justice Center after being medically cleared at the scene and is being held on his warrant. Additional charges will be forwarded to the Crawford County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration.

Deputies then obtained a search warrant for John’s residence to look for the firearm. While searching the residence, Deputies discovered a homemade explosive device with a fuse. Deputies exited the residence and contacted the Bomb Squad from Ashland County Sheriff’s Office. The bomb squad arrived and removed the explosive device from the residence.

Deputies resumed searching the residence and later recovered the firearm. Other assisting agencies called to the scene were Life First ambulance, Tiro-Auburn Fire Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
